School exclusions: Preparing for independent reviews and reconsidering

Who is this training for?

School governors who have already completed their statutory duty to consider the permanent exclusion of a pupil, have declined to reinstate the pupil, and parents have now requested an independent review.

This session is specifically targeted towards boards who have neither attended an independent review before, nor been recommended nor directed by the review panel to reconsider an exclusion.

This session is not designed to train governors to become members of independent review panels (currently not provided by LK Training and Consultancy).

  • Independent reviews: What is the purpose, who is on the panel and what does the panel want to know?

What will we cover in this session?

What to know before booking.

This session is open to schools and academies, and can only be booked by a group of governors or trustees from the same school/Trust at a time. ‍

  • This session will be facilitated by Lee Kennedy.

  • The session is specifically designed for governors new to the exclusion process.

  • A Microsoft Teams link for the session will be shared with participants by email once the booking has been made.

  • It is advisable to join via the Teams link a few minutes before the session starts to ensure you have connected successfully.

  • This training links to the statutory exclusions guidance published by the Department for Education in July 2026, therefore will be for schools and academies in England only.

  • The session may be rescheduled if there are less than five participants booked on. 48 hours notice will be provided.

  • Due to my professional role within Kent, training is available for schools and academies outside Kent.
