School exclusion training for school governors

Who is this training for?

School governors and academy trustees who would like to know more about the role they play having oversight of matters relating to exclusions at their school, including data analysis, understanding internal processes and reviewing the behaviour policy.

This session is specifically targeted towards governors with little or no knowledge of statutory exclusions guidance. This session may be helpful for governors as part of their induction process.

This session is not designed to train governors to consider suspensions and permanent exclusions for individual pupils where there is a legal duty to do so.

  • An introduction to statutory guidance and updates in the 2026 edition.

  • Day to day procedures, including register codes.

  • Understanding Off-site directions and Managed moves.

  • What the board/trustees need to have in place in preparation for the legal duty to consider suspensions and permanent exclusions.

  • Safeguarding and alternative provision.

  • ‍Behaviour and exclusion policies (as well as other documentation).

  • Understanding cohorts at risk of exclusion.

  • Using exclusion data effectively. ‍

What will we cover in this session?

This session is open to schools and academies, and can only be booked by a group of governors or trustees from the same school/Trust at a time.

  • This session will be facilitated by Lee Kennedy.

  • The session is specifically designed for governors new to the exclusion process.

  • A Microsoft Teams link for the session will be shared with participants by email once the booking has been made.

  • It is advisable to join via the Teams link a few minutes before the session starts to ensure you have connected successfully.

  • This training links to the statutory exclusions guidance published by the Department for Education in July 2026, therefore will be for schools and academies in England only.

  • The session may be rescheduled if there are less than five participants booked on. 48 hours notice will be provided.

  • Due to my professional role within Kent, training is only available for schools and academies outside Kent.
